In Australia, a typical household consumes an average of around 12 kilowatt hours of electricity per day. Over one year, a 1.5 to 3 kilowatt solar PV system can generate around 45–90 per cent of this, though the amount generated by the system varies throughout the year as the amount of daily sunshine changes.
The amount of the PV generated electricity used in your home will depend on the size of your PV system, how much electricity you use, and how much of this you consume during the day. The higher your daytime consumption, the higher amount of PV generated electricity you will use. Typically, around 30 to 50 per cent of the electricity generated by a PV system is consumed in the home and 50 to 70 percent is exported to the grid.
Electricity that is exported to the grid earns you a credit from your power provider called a “feed-in-tariff”. This Feed-In-Tariff varies based on where you are and what time of day your system generates excess power and feeds it to the grid.
Given that a solar energy system will operate at more than 80% efficiency for 25 years or more, and costing roughly the amount you’d pay in power bills for approximately two, does it really need a second thought?

The total number of people employed in the renewable energy industry globally passed the 10 million mark for the first in history, with solar PV jobs leading the way.
A new report from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) says 500,000 new renewable energy jobs were created globally in 2017, a 5.3 per cent jump from 2016 and bringing the total to 10.3 million.
The report, drawing from data from Green Energy Markets, states large scale solar directly supported the employment of about 4, 400 people in Australia during 2017, with another 5,500 directly employed in the design, sale and installation of roof-top solar power systems.
The situation has been looking even better during 2018 for renewables-based jobs in Australia.
More recent figures we reported from Green Energy Markets’ latest Renewable Energy Index indicate the 5,175 megawatts of large-scale renewables under construction in Australia at the end of March was providing enough work to employ 18,182 people. Added to that, Australia’s rooftop solar sector supported 6,084 full-time equivalent jobs during the month.
